American Wood Council

    • We are the leader in the development of building codes and standards for wood design and provide online and live training to support their implementation.


      Our education programs include courses related to the use of traditional and engineered wood products for residential and commercial applications and are ideally suited for code officials and design professionals.


      We have partnered with the International Code Council (ICC), the American Institute of Architects (AIA), and the National Council on Structural Engineers Associations (NCSEA) to grant professional continuing education.

In applications where wood may be exposed to moisture, insects or fungal organisms, preservative-treated wood can help ensure a building’s durability. In this presentation, participants will learn about the manufacturing process for pressure-treated wood, available products and their differences, and how preserved wood is used in construction. Topics include an overview of preservative treatments, desired service life and exposure conditions, AWPA Use Category standards and current issues concerning the safe use of treated wood. Participants will also receive instructions for free downloading of the Treated Lumber Guide smartphone/tablet app.

This course will discuss the approval of beyond prescriptive code tall mass timber developments through effective collaboration and project vision. Learn how the largest mass timber high-rise building in the world, the Ascent, was completed by involving the right people at the right time and approving IBC code variances supported by laboratory testing. Structural design concepts used for the structure metropolitan high-rise building firefighting concepts will be discussed briefly, as will for fire and code officials, engineers, and other design professionals.
